A 2010 Granite Hill High School graduate and El Cajon, Calif. native is serving aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer that, while more than 600 feet long, looks as small as a fishing boat to enemy radar.

Eleven year old El Cajon resident Melanie Arellano, has qualified as a Super Stock Rally Champion for the 79th Annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships to be held in Akron Ohio.

Melanie has been working all season to earn enough points to qualify. She has traveled to places like Tuolumne CA, Livermore CA, Henderson Nevada, and Salem Oregon, to name a few. Melanie also raced local races such as Oceanside CA, San Diego CA, and her home track Alpine CA.

California State Senator Joel Anderson successfully led a community coffee town hall event on Thursday, Jun. 23 in Lemon Grove with over 100 of local constituents. Lemon Grove City Councilwoman Racquel Vasquez hosted the event.

The City of El Cajon Veterans Commission presents a “Veteran of the Year” Award, recognizing those who go above and beyond in serving their community through their leadership abilities and/or community service in El Cajon, making a big impact on those they serve.

Final selections will be based on dedication, commitment, and demonstrated impact of those served.

Santee resident Tracy Sundlun, senior VP of global events, Competitor Group, will be honored by the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) San Diego office with a 2016 Father of the Year award at a fundraising dinner on Thursday, June 16, at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, 3777 La Jolla Village Dr., San Diego.

Woman’s Club of Lakeside members President Liz Harris and Secretary Carmen Holt, in conjunction with the Lakeside Union School District, Lakeside PTA Council and the Lakeside Community Collaborative purchased 4,800 blue bracelets with the saying “ It Is Not Okay” on them, one for every child in the Lakeside School District. The project was done during the week of April 11-15th, the actual week of child abuse and prevention programs that were being done around the State on a National level.

The San Diego Blood Bank, primary supplier of blood to the majority of hospitals in San Diego County, and the County of San Diego have merged their annual respective 5K events to Present the Live Well San Diego 5K benefitting the San Diego Blood Bank on Saturday, July 30, 2016.    

We, “Friends of the El Monte Valley” from San Diego County, represented by wildlife advocates Ana Nita and Billy Ortiz, organized a public rally on May 22, at Hanson Pond in Lakeside to protest against the closing of a public trail built with public funds.
