The five candidates running for the two open seats on the La Mesa City Council faced the public in a forum sponsored by the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce Thursday evening. During the scheduled hour and a half exchange, candidates were asked questions ranging a variety of issues ranging from from the city’s finances to the homeless population.

EL CAJON — East County citizens on opposing sides of the political fence will join together to protest a law they consider unconstitutional and a violation of long established American rights of due process.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) signed by President Obama December 2011, has provisions which might be interpreted to allow the U.S. military to detain indefinitely American citizens who are apprehended in the U.S. without charges or trial.

The NDAA was passed almost unanimously in the U.S. Senate and Congress.

Senate Bill SB 157, sponsored by State Senator Joel Anderson (R-Alpine) was recently defeated by the California State Senate Governance and Finance Committee in a vote of 4-2-3, with three abstentions.

Five votes were needed to pass the measure.

The proposed legislation would have provided relief to California victims of the fraudulent Bernie Madoff Ponzi investment scheme. States such as New York and New Jersey have already passed similar legislation.
