Well, we are starting a little earlier this year, but the Best of East County Reader’s Poll is opening up this week and we want your input. This is an exciting time for us as we get to see what you believe are the best places in East County to dine, get medical treatment, trail riding and an abundance of other categories that give our readers a go-to guide when looking at places to visit in East County.

Aye mates, Grossmont College’s theatrical department has done it again with its production of “Treasure Island, A new Musical.” Its full of song, dance and a whole lot of fun for ye ole’ scallywags out there. With a script prepared from scratch, this is a forlorn tale of the treacherous hunt for Captain Flint’s bountiful treasure, but who’s on the good side is an adventure that you can only see for yeself by going to the play.

As I have been celebrating my two oldest children’s birthdays this week, my mind has been in several directions as there are a few people that I know that are facing a difficult time in their lives. A friend lost a long-time friend and mother in one week, and as we have been reporting on for a few months with articles and calendar events, Ana Sanchez with the Lakeside VFW Post has taken a dramatic turn for the worst.

Black Angus rolled out some amazing specials for the rest of the summer from pre dinner cocktails to the finishing touch of delectable desserts. And you cannot forget the amazing choice cuts of certified Angus beef that it is know for, the backbone of this iconic steakhouse since 1964.

Here are some of the highlights of this season’s specials, and a little bit more.

One of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center’s signature fundraiser is getting ready for its 40th year. Haute with Heart Fashion Show and Luncheon features a fashion show, with students, celebrities and long time supporters and staff on the runway, lunch, boutique shopping, silent and live auctions, opportunity drawings and topping it off with the traditionally loved performance by the Center’s students.

Thousands of youth die unexpectedly from Sudden Cardiac Arrest/Death (SCA/D) each year while playing sports. Three to five teens in San Diego. SCA’s are not part of the pre-participation sports physically and can be detected with a simple EKG.

Coming up very soon in August, the Mt. Helix Foundation is holding its 10th Annual heART of Mt. Helix fundraiser. For the first time, on July 8, it held its very first heART of Mt. Helix First Juried Art Show, which can now be seen at Nainsook Framing + art in La Mesa. Juried by local Mt. Helix resident and artist Duke Windsor, the first, second, third and four honorable mentions will be taken to the top of Mt. Helix the night of the event for auction with 20 percent of the sales going to the Foundation. The remaining art will stay on display at Nainsook Framing until Aug.

Open Mic in East County has evolved since first running across it accidentally at the Starbucks in Rancho San Diego. Although it has changed venues a few times, it has always been an entertaining event with a wide variety of musicians that freely share their talents with the people of East County. Now it seems, it has found a wonderful venue at Better Days Pizzeria in Lakeside. A family friendly restaurant, this gives local musicians the chance to gather together and collaborate, mentor and discover new talent within our area.

Okay, where to start. There is a lot of information and little space, running short of time, but there is another calamity of different ideas in what should be done with the property designated as Lakeside Downs or Parcel S302 when looking at proposed zoning changes from the County. The proposed change will re-designate seven parcels from semi-rural residential/village residential to open space.

I laughed from the beginning to the end.

Filled with believable hilarity, “Women in Jeopardy” was an exceptional beginning for La Mesa’s Lamplighters Community Theatre’s opening night of its historic 80th season. This new comedy (by Wendy MacLeod) was a breath of fresh air for the world of comedy on stage. That is when you could catch your breath.
