Political correctness is going to be the downfall of our generation

If you go to school in the beautiful state of California, social warriors who shove political correctness down your throats most likely surround you. Now, political correctness has good intentions, to educate the public about what they are ignorant of, but it went from that goal to being a weapon threatening our freedom of expression.

If you go to school in the beautiful state of California, social warriors who shove political correctness down your throats most likely surround you. Now, political correctness has good intentions, to educate the public about what they are ignorant of, but it went from that goal to being a weapon threatening our freedom of expression.

According to Merriam Webster, political correctness is conforming to a belief that language and practices that could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated.

Sounds harmless, right? Not. If there is one thing the Americans take pride off it is our first amendment and the freedom of expression we have. In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, Orwell describes a dystopia where speech is restricted. Nothing said is of meaning or value, just words in the fear of offending and sparkling controversy and nostalgia. We seem to be headed that direction.

Some great examples of political correctness would be “Don’t assume their gender,” “It’s African American, not Black,” “ You can’t say _____ about ___, it’s offensive,” the word “God” is apparently another taboo and the list goes on.

We should stop tippy-toeing and creating terms just because we are afraid to offend someone. Anything of value that should be said would offend those who just don’t want to hear what they don’t agree with or what they don’t believe in.

A generation that does not get straight to the point and get vocal about their wants and needs is a generation that is not getting any of its wants or needs. It is a great intention trying to not offend someone, but if we have to make sure that everything we say isn’t offensive to someone somewhere we would live our whole lives not saying what should be said and nothing we will say will have value.

Be vocal. Be bold in what you say. And say what you feel should be said.
