Monte Vista High School students, volunteers, and parents participated in the Monte Vista High School Community Clean-Up Day on March 3. The one-mile route started at the 7-Eleven, located at 10049 Campo Road, and finished at Butler’s Coffee in the Casa de Oro area in Spring Valley.
Monte Vista High School students, volunteers, and parents participated in the Monte Vista High School Community Clean-Up Day on March 3. The one-mile route started at the 7-Eleven, located at 10049 Campo Road, and finished at Butler’s Coffee in the Casa de Oro area in Spring Valley.
The project was coordinated by the East County Youth Coalition, the Casa de Oro Community Alliance, the high school, with Megan Gustafson, who is with the Institute for Public Strategies, overseeing the canopied sign-in area and start up of the walk.
“There are approximately 40 participating,” said Monte Vista High School teacher, Mark Campillo. “We will be in groups of five, with an adult, picking up trash.”
Neon-lime colored vests, brooms, buckets, and trash pick-up sticks were handed out to the students. A pick-up truck, driven by Reader Campdoras, made trips to the students to unload their collected trash into his truck. The students worked their way down the route and picked up trash from 8-10 a.m. during this first community clean-up for these combined groups.
Sonia Jauregui, a junior, said keeping the streets clean is important.
“I’m a part of the East County Youth Coalition,” said Jauregui. “It reflects on every one who lives here. I want to help clean it up.”
Monarchs came out en masse to help.
“Our school motto is ‘Stay classy, Monarchs’ and we can’t stay classy if our streets aren’t clean,” said junior Mariah Ortiz. This is monarch territory indeed.
Don Powell, and his wife, Elise, were on hand and quick to say thank you to the companies like Dixieline and Smart & Final for their various contributions.
Parent Jay Steiger, PTA-Vice President for Legislation, said coming together was key to the success of the morning.
“The passion for change is there,” he said. “It’s just a matter of coming together to fix the things that need to be fixed.”
School resource officer, SDSO Corey McCoy, said the morning was good for the students as well as the streets of Casa de Oro.
“It gives the students a sense of accomplishment and pride in their community,” he said. “They can make a difference.”
