It was a family fun night at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds as the Lakeside and rodeo community gathered together to raise funds for one of Lakeside’s own, Rachel Owens-Sarno. The reigning 2016 Miss Rodeo California, the feeling throughout conversations in the crowd was that Owens-Sarno represents the sport of rodeo in fine fashion, but also represents Lakeside and with the outstanding job she has done throughout her young years in the rodeo circuit. And that is what the evening was all about, getting her the funds necessary to participate in the Miss Rodeo America scholarship pageant in Las Vegas in November.

Owens-Sarno has spent the majority of this year representing the state of California, attending rodeo events across America and has a heavy schedule of appearances still to make before the pageant.

Everything for this fundraiser from the El Capitan Stadium Association’s venue, a “Taste of Lakeside” from local restaurants and the many raffle prizes were donated, leaving no overhead for cost and between ticket sales and raffle prizes, all funds raised go straight to Owens-Sarno’s upcoming appearances and participation in the Miss Rode America pageant. The pageant is a full week of competition in Las Vegas, including appearances, horsemanship, speech representation and most important the love and knowledge of the sport of rodeo.

This is no easy task, and it has a high ticket value, having to provide everything needed for the pageant herself, including requirements for custom made hats and boots by PRCA sponsors, and the costs of the trip itself.

Throughout the evening, Owens-Sarno spoke to everyone there and there were many discussions on creating her custom made denim gown to the “what still needs to be done” in order to get her prepared to win the title of 2017 Miss Rodeo America. Through it all though, it was a great event and everyone was entertained with the casual fundraiser. Raffle items ranged from custom made jewelry, horse care kits, girl’s night out packages, some “man cave” items, and custom belts, harnesses and a saddle.

Throughout the evening, the Patrick Howard Trampus Band (PHT) entertained the crowd with its signature country rock sound, playing people’s favorites allowing people to sing along or dance to their favorite country tunes. From Ramona, this band is well known in Lakeside, performing many times in the East County area and a favorite at many El Capitan Stadium Association and Lakeside Optimist events.

Owens-Sarno said that she was honored and humbled at the turnout and the support of the entire community that stood beside her now, in the past and for the future. And the sentiment was mutual throughout all of the supporters that attended. And that is that Owens-Sarno is in the highest position with her personality, experience and expertise to become the next reigning 2017 Miss Rodeo America.
