LAKESIDE — Consecutive rides during the April 22 performance of the Lakeside Rodeo changed the Bull Riding lead, which held at 89 points after Welsey Silcox rode Water Canal for that score.
Silcox earned $2,459.55 for his first-place score in the event along with $326.66 of day money which was split between the three bull riders who had qualified rides that performance.
One of those bull riders was Corey Maier, who rode immediately prior to Silcox and scored 88 points on Evil Eye.

“This rodeo’s treated me pretty good,” said Maier, who received $1,885.63 for second place among the 59 bull riders plus day money.
Silcox didn’t worry about what other cowboys had scored. “I just ride my bull and hope I win or place,” he said.
Growney Brothers, Big Stone, and Julio Moreno partnered for stock, and Water Canal was one of Moreno’s bulls. “That was a really good bull,” Silcox said. “He just kicked out and kept spinning.”
Silcox was the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s world champion in 2007 and has been to the National Finals Rodeo six times. Fallon Taylor, who won the Barrel Racing with a time of 16.94 seconds, may end up as an NFR contestant for the first time this December.
Taylor set the Red Bluff arena record with a run of 17.07 seconds before making the 15-hour drive (not including an hour of sleep) to Lakeside. “It’s a hellacious long way from Red Bluff, but it’s worth it,” Taylor said.
This is Taylor’s first year riding six-year-old Baby Flo. “Darn good horse,” Taylor said.
Taylor rode in the April 21 evening performance at Lakeside. “Good weekend. I’m loving California,” said Taylor, who was born in Tampa and moved to Texas when she was seven.
Taylor was one of 61 barrel racers. The smallest contingent of participants were the 17 steer wrestlers, including average (aggregate) and first go-round winner Sean Santucci. “Good runs. I was pretty happy,” said Santucci, who received $1,060.66 apiece for his go-round and average wins and $250.16 for fourth place in the second go-round.j
Santucci won the first go-round with a run of 4.0 seconds. His second run of 5.1 seconds gave him an average of 9.1 seconds. “They’re just good old steers and pattern pretty well,” he said.
Although the entirety of Santucci’s earnings will count towards his standings total, a steer wrestler traditionally gives 25 percent of earnings to the hazer who guides his horse. Santucci’s hazer was Rhett Kennedy. Santucci rode Bill, a 17-year old horse, during his Steer Wrestling runs.
Pepe Arballo had a time of 4.7 seconds to win the second go-round and $1,060.66.
The Lakeside Rodeo had 24 pairs of team ropers. Dakota Shipp and Brandon Bates won the first go-round and $765.45 with a time of 5.0 seconds, Clay White and John Chaves had a run of 4.5 seconds to win the second go-round and $765.45, and an average of 11.6 seconds gave Jake Barnes and Tyler Getzwiller first place and $1,148.13.
Jordan Ketscher’s time of 8.4 seconds won the first Tie-Down Roping go-round and $1,118.88, which was also the first-place payout Anthony Estep received for his 8.6-second run which won the second go-round. Joseph Parsons had a two-head time of 18.2 seconds which earned him $1,216.13 for the best average among the 25 cowboys in that event.
Tyler Nelson’s score of 86 points topped the 18 Bareback Riding contestants and earned him $1,805.76. Morgan Forbes scored 82 points in the Saddle Bronc Riding to earn $1,980.75 for the best score among the 35 cowboys.
