Inspiring Individuality

If you ever find yourself walking through a school campus and observe the different children around you, you may realize they really are not all that different from one another. Sporting the same clothes and hairstyles while acting very similar makes it difficult to notice any differences beyond genetic appearances. It seems that our society teaches children from a young age that being different is a flaw and conformity is key to success, but this leaves no room for individual development or societal advancements.

We need to encourage people to develop their own thoughts rather than continuing to follow others. Our world can never advance if great minds are suffocated by mainstream rules. Every person has different contributions that are unique and crucial. We all come from different backgrounds that form us into different people and we need to accept and encourage these differences. We need to stand together, but as separate individuals.

Conformity also causes mental strife, especially for teens where the desire to become an individual and also maintain their social role of fitting in contradicts one another. People become lost because society has taught them to prioritize being accepted by others rather than figuring out who they are as individuals and pleasing themselves. Similarly, relationships should not be built on individuals trying to please each other by hiding who they really are. It is more enjoyable and intriguing to associate with people who have fresh ideas and their own opinions, and serves as an escape from the typical interactions with people who lack individuality.

Satisfaction and content are attached to individuality. Being able to function and succeed on your own is a great accomplishment that nourishes self worth. Realizing that your own ideas are valuable and can make a difference can change your entire attitude about the world and yourself. When people learn to respect and appreciate themselves as individuals they can approach life with a meaningful voice exclusive to each individual on their own.

Our world is beautiful because people are eccentric in their own way. It is a somber, dull place where every maverick is suppressed by the idea that conformity is more important than his or her own thoughts. We should not overlook the power of an individual when they are capable of developing their own ideas. Individuals can achieve so much more than just fitting in.
